San Jose was purchased from a Nicaraguan bank in 2003. The bank had claimed that the farm was well-maintained, however, a visit by the owners made it clear that the farm had been near-abandoned. Notwithstanding the bank’s neglect, they saw great potential in it. It was purchased mostly due to its relatively high altitude for Nicaragua. Once the soil was analyzed by Anacafe in Guatemala, it was discovered that the soil has a PH level of 6. This meant that coffee shrubs could assimilate more easily to the soil’s nutritional content. This advantage led to the planting of many different varieties, such as Gesha, Javanica, and Yellow Pacamara
